Power Development
- Developed and tested 1600 watt power system for 3000 ft applications – motor/generator and emergency battery without powered tether.
- Developed Excel program for HALE power and weight analysis – combined Aerostat analysis with solar panel/battery power and weight calculations.
2009 Goals – Next Generation Power System
- Acquire and install 300 watt thin film solar photovoltaic array on Aerostat Testbed
- Demonstrate characteristics and control of thin film photovoltaic arrays at low altitude for eventual HALE use through the following :
- characterize the power output (V-I curve) and efficiency of the arrays using dummy loads;
- evaluate the effect of mounting arrays to the Aerostat, optimizing adhesion and backing temperature during operation; and
- continue development and characterization of the power management system including voltage control and peak power tracking.
- Develop a 1 kilowatt laboratory prototype solar photovoltaic array, with necessary controls for multiple array elements and sub-elements:
- develop boost converter to aid voltage regulation;
- initiate development of large array Battery Management System for integration of lithium ion batteries.
